<UPDATE>
Everything you need to know about the Tulip:

</UPDATE>
I've been thinking my way through a new model and figured I'd share where I'm at with it here. It will be loosely based on the Teisco Tulip guitars, but with several changes/improvements.
The impetus is my brother Matt's Tulip (pictured below). While I was refretting it he borrowed an esquire we built out of Douglas-fir. We built a pair of guitars out of Douglas-fir (the esquire and the Osprey prototype #085). Both guitars sounded fantastic, couple that with the light weight, good looks, ready availability, and good price of Douglas-fir, and it's about time it was used in luthiery. It is primarily used in high-load structural construction and homemade aircraft (replacing Sitka Spruce). <EDIT>We will be using Douglas-fir in some Tulips, others will use other coniferous wood species (Hem-Fir, Pine, etc.).</EDIT
Some of the improvements:
Thicker <EDIT>than vintage</EDIT> body made from Douglas-fir <EDIT>or other coniferous species</EDIT>
Jumbo frets, 12" radius, 25.5" scale, maple/rosewood neck
Wilkinson/Gotoh wrap bridge with intonation adjustment
Gotoh tuners
pickups<EDIT>pair of minihumbuckers or P-90s</EDIT>
Metal control plate/no pickguard
Polymerized oil finish on the neck, nitro lacquer on the body
This will make the base model, with several upgrades available at additional cost (Lollar pickups, Pigtail bridge, wood choices, neck specs, etc).
The idea is to create a more affordable semi-custom instrument.
I'm excited!
