I wasn't sure if I wanted to take on a BBS, but I hope you enjoy the board, and find it useful. Enjoy! Thanks for stopping by!

This place is buzzin' Rich! I have a set of unpotted Duncan '59s coming from Specialty Guitars, but the order is delayed because they ran out, and it's taking Duncan a while to fill the order. I think they're the only ones who sell them. They might be a bit of a handful, but I figure that all those highly sought after '50s Les Pauls had unpotted pickups unless they all got potted along the way. Keep changing my mind what to try them in. Hey Chris, try this sometime in a humbucker guitar. It's 1.8megs between the bridge pickup's connection at the switch, and the ground. lasttelecaster.home.comcast.net/newtele/Goldie/Goldie1800K.jpgI was trying to bring the pot down to about 390K, but it seems to give the pickup a lot more drive. I have no electronics training, so I haven't figured out why yet. Pete

I'd be interested to know how those unpotted pickups work out for you. I've used others without wax in the past, and run into feedback issues. We've had some lightly potted pickups that sounded really good at low volumes, but they always squealed like a stuck pig when you put the hammer down...

I might be shooting myself in the foot with the unpotted thing because I grew up playing too loud, in the Big Muff era, so I like having some gain too! I'm still waiting for Specialty Guitars to get the unpotted '59s in from Duncan, and I'm starting to get impatiant because I hate waiting. I might ask them to change my order to a set of potted '59s, because that's what I have in my hotrodded MIJ Tele with the used Rice neck on it. And just personally, I like those as much as my WCR Crossroads set. The WCRs have great tone and all, but the Duncan '59s are more of the sound I was looking for. If I can wait long enough, I think the unpotted '59s will end up in my '82 Les Paul Standard because that's the guitar that's the most in need of a good set of humbuckers right now. No real need for two Telecasters with two Duncan '59s. Pete

I hate waiting too. that burst tele looks great! Have you ever tried Lollar Imperials? We have used a couple of them (specified the low wind ones) with tremendous results. We can hook you up for low bucks, Pete, if you're interested. Fast delivery, too.

I'd like to try the Lollar Imperial. Do you have a bridge Lollar Imperial with a single conductor cable, and a chrome or nickel cover? Pete

I'll see what that would run tomorrow (Monday). We don't have any in stock, but can order them up any way you like.

Sometimes I'm just thinking out loud. I just played that Standard for about an hour this evening, and the weight really caught up with me! Have you ever tried Schaller Golden '50s pickups? I have a bridge and neck set of those that I bought about 25 years ago, and I've never used the things because their wiring instructions were really screwy. Someone mentioned them over in the Duncan forum, and I'm seeing some positive reaction to the things. So I found clearer wiring instructions for them at Stewmac. Turns out tht the essential info was on the Schaller wiring sheet, but it was kind of hidden. I might try these tomorrow now that I actually know how to wire them! I hate fout conductor cables. Shouldn't have to need instructions. Pete

Don't like the Schaller pickup. It's rather warm sounding for a bridge PU, but I don't like it's tone, and it lacks clarity. Not as good as a DiMarzio PAF or a Duncan '59 IMO. There was something wrong with the neck PU so I didn't get to try a matched set. Pete

Nice Lester. Were those Super Distortions in there? That sunburst Tele had one of those in it's bridge position back when it still had it's original 250K pots. It was mellower than you'd think. I have a second one that's never been used, that I got on sale. I could have just loaded my Les Paul Standard up with those, and been done with it, but I wanted it back in the low power humbucker range. I have an uncovered, potted Duncan '59 being shipped to me (I'm waiting) to go into the bridge position of the LP now. The plan is to use it with the original neck PU. And I'll flip the magnet in the '59 to get the out of phase thing.
The current plan is to put a better set of Kluson tuners on the rosewood neck from that Sunburst Tele's neck. The more string changes, the stiffer they got! And fit than on the mahogany gold Tele body from USACG, and give it the unpotted '59 Duncans, when they finally come through. It's taking longer than I was expecting.
I think since that gold Tele has sort of a Les Paul thing going on, it really needed a rosewood fingerboard. And I don't think the Allparts neck from GRguitars was a good match for it anyhow. I have a few projects pending on pickups I don't have yet. The WCR pickups can go to my Les Paul Junior/Special.
Pete
