I have an '86 G&L ASAT. The B string has cut a groove in the first fret causing the string to hang up and "ping."
Can I have the fret "filled" and dressed or would it be better to just go ahead and have it replaced?

I haven't had real good luck with filling grooves. I've done it on a few of my own, and the repair lasts for a short while- but invariably returns. If you have enough fret left on the rest of the guitar, and the groove isn't real deep, sometimes a level/crown job will fix it. Otherwise, probably better to replace the one fret. I've softened the edges of a groove with a slight filing, too- which keeps it from "pinging", but it is a risk... If the fret top gets too low, you can wind up chasing the string all the way up the fretboard, so if you try smoothing it go VERY SLOWLY.

A level/crown will fix it as long as you have enough fretwire left.
