While visiting Guatemala, I spotted/played a charango in a music store. It intrigued me, and there were two- one acoustic, one electric.. I had never seen or heard of one before. I resisted the impulse to buy one, as the workmanship was not up to my standards, but found them to be interesting instruments. Now I'm thinking I might have to build one.. Here's a link I found while Googling.. Cool instrument! It has 5 courses of strings (10 total), all tuned within an octave. Wild! The originals were built from an armadillo, now most are carved from a block of wood, in the shape of an armadillo. Similar to a mandolin, but definitely a different "animal" muh2051-04.fa04.fsu.edu/students/lessons/15/real_20_3.html
