MFDs have ceramic magnets and soft iron polepieces, compared to a P-90s AlNiCo magnet and screw poles. The P-90 has a shallower, wider coil. A P-90 has a baseplate under the magnets. The bog difference is in the sound. MFDs have a wider frequency response with stronger bass and treble, where a P-90 is a thicker sound. Output feels about the same to me, although I have not compared side by side. The MFD design was patented by Leo Fender in 1980, he was going for a strong output with fewer winds. Both great! The MFD is my absolute favorite bass pickup for my playing, and I will never part with my '82 L-1000. For the guitar ones, I like the wider style (like used on the SC-2 and Broadcaster) better than the narrower SC-3/S-500 style and the small humbuckers are great also. I have little experience with the newer tele/strat shaped ones.

I'll bet I would like P90's. I love my G&L's. I have a Climax Bass with that huge pickup...whoa. More mids on the P90. Clarity & punch with the MFD's.
Thanks, John
