One of our good friends brought some awesome guitars over last Friday, and left a few for some repairs/restorations. The following is a look at what went down so far..
The ASAT is a Leo era body that had been refinished (poorly), then had coins glued to the face and the pickguard, then the coins had been pried off. The electronics were pretty sloppy, too, which will be restored at a later date.. Pics to follow...

It's a really cool body, despite the minor problem areas. I'll update this thread as things progress.

Cool! Salvaging one of Leo's offspring. She's looking great so far. How did you manage to save the pick guard without scratching the heck out of it? Were you able to remove the glue with some kind of solvent?

Were you able to remove the glue with some kind of solvent? Well, I scraped it with a single edge razor, then wetsanded to 1000 grit. Then steel wool, then a couple grades of polishing compound, then machine buffed it. It has a little bit of very light scuffing, but not bad. I think another bout of wetsanding and hand rubbing with compound will get it there.. I told you I was a little nuts.  No, I never found any chemicals that would touch the glue. No idea what it was, other than it was a PITA. Luckily, I scraped and sanded it successfully. ;D |

So what kind of finish did you use? I made a little dye, then nitro sanding sealer, then nitro. I didn't do the back with top coats yet, as I wanted a customer OK for the color. Happily, it worked out. We're happy, he's happy.. Now to get down to serious business.. He brought over a used scratchplate (crinkle finish metal), which fit this body exactly. I'm thinking do a tiny bit of distressing, and let it fly. It will be a very nice players' guitar, once I finish up my mods, and Chris rewires it.. ;D |
